NC Free Legal Answers “Empower Hour”

Virtual Pro Bono Opportunity 

The NC Free Legal Answers pro bono program involves answering civil legal questions through an online pro bono clinic administered by the NC Bar Foundation on behalf of the American Bar Association. Durham attorneys are invited to participate virtually next Tuesday afternoon; the Durham Bar board members will be participating together in-person in advance of a board meeting and invite you to join them on Zoom for this event. 

A tour of the user-friendly system will be provided from 4:00 to 4:15 to all participants who are new to the online platform. Questions come from the public and most do not require thorough research by anyone with a law school education. Of course, volunteers are certainly free to research during the hour before posting an answer with which they are comfortable. Malpractice insurance coverage is provided to volunteer participants.

At present there are dozens of family law questions, but also intellectual property, immigration, real estate, estate planning/probate, speeding tickets, personal injury, basic contracts, landlord-tenant, school discipline and employment law questions.

Step #3: Once you have registered and prior to the event, please also register yourself in the Free Legal Answers portal – registration takes less than 5 minutes:

 

1. Go to nc.freelegalanswers.org.

2. Click on “Volunteer Attorney Registration” at the top of the site.

3. Read and agree to Attorney Agreement.

4. Fill out registration information – you will need your NC State Bar Number.

5. Click on the activation link sent to your email (check spam folder if you don’t see it within a minute).

6. Await email confirming administrative approval of your account – you’re all set!


Please share widely with your peers and colleagues, we would love to have a big group on Zoom and in the platform for that hour. Ancillary organizations are especially encouraged to share this with your members -- so please share with the George H. White Bar, Family Law Bar, DOWA and other groups!
