Young Lawyers Division

Bylaws Link

The Young Lawyers Division of the Durham County Bar Association is the best place for new attorneys of any age to become involved in the Durham legal community. Membership is available to any attorney within their first five years of practice, regardless of age, and is also open to all attorneys under the age of 36.

"This may be the only place you’ll find that you can remain “young” for over ten years after being licensed, depending on when you started your legal career.

Durham’s YLD is particularly well suited to new attorneys because membership is free. This is a new development, and comes with only one caveat. After your first year of practice, during which both the DCBA and YLD are free, you will need to pay the Durham County Bar Association’s membership fee of $125. At that point you can continue to participate in events and functions of both the YLD and DCBA.

Note that the DCBA membership features 12 hours of CLE including Substance Abuse/Mental Health and Ethics, in just the right combinations to satisfy all of your annual CLE obligations to the NC State Bar, plus half a dozen lunch meetings during the year.

"So, if all good things come with a price …. what do I get for my free membership in the YLD?

Quite a lot, actually. The YLD has become adept at bringing new attorneys together in fun and interesting ways which are free or nearly free. The YLD has hosted the Wills for Heroes Project, a Habitat for Humanity Build, and has participated in the Annual DCBA Raising the Bar 5K. In addition there have been social events at a number of local venues.

The YLD Listserv is the best way to find out the meeting location. Please email yld@durhambar.org to be added to the listserv or for more information about the YLD.
